I am a Distinguished Professor (one of the 10 across RMIT) and a successful Director who has created a number of nationally and internationally recognised ground-breaking teaching and research outcomes. As a leader, I established and am the Director of the most successful research centre at RMIT (Centre for Advanced Electronics and Sensors (CADES)) that now has a strong international reputation for the development of novel sensors, microfluidics and medical devices. I established a large sized research and development group of ~40 PhD students and ~15 researchers and academics. What I have achieved so far at RMIT has been significant, considering my age, degree of seniority (15 years since PhD), and minimal initial financial support. I have co-authored over 350 highly cited publications that generated 12.5% of RMIT’s total international citations in 2015 alone. I am the most cited Australian academic in any field of engineering with less than 15 years since PhD graduation, according to Scopus, with over 13,500 citations to my co-authored works (ref: Google Scholar, October 2016).
As a lecturer, I have created some of the most successful academic references in the fields of sensors and nanotechnology for which I have received coveted Australia’s Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) Awards. My books resulting from these teaching materials are now amongst the best sellers in the fields internationally. I have been involved in the management/academic teams of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at RMIT and have
been instrumental in the rapid rise of the School’s profile, in terms of student numbers, increase in students’ entrance scores and international ranking in the past decade.
I am one of the most recognised engineers in the field of nanotechnology enabled systems, with a high international standing for the development of medical devices, sensors, micro/nano fluidics, nano electronics and functional materials. I have introduced several new paradigms to bio sensing and optical transducing templates, including novel nanotechnology enabled biosensors, electronic and optical systems. I have contributed significantly to the field of electronics and optics with the development of various types of two dimensional semiconductors (the most highly cited paper of Nature Publishing Group in 2012, Nature Nanotechnology, 7, 699). The devices, which I have created, are now used in a number of industries and by reputed companies for gas and bio sensing. This includes Veolia France, Alere UK, BHP Billiton Australia and Katcon Mexico. More importantly, several of my developed sensors will be employed by the medical sector for point-of-care diagnostics including “human gas capsules” (Ref: Time Magazine, March 2015), which has been predicted to significantly impact the medical diagnostics market (ref: ThomasNet and Yahoo Finance).

Successfully converted research concepts into patents, which have proved attractive for industrial uptake:
• A large contract with Veolia, France, for the development of anaerobic fermentation plants
• A key person for the development of surfaces acoustic wave biosensors for the UK based biosensor Company, CMI (Cambridge Medical Innovation) Ltd., Cambridge (now the Cambridge research and development centre for Alere Inc)
• The gas sensor capsule, which was developed in collaboration with CSIRO, under a Department of Agriculture funded project has passed the pilot tests and will be soon deployed in many farms in Australia to assess the effect of ruminants' feed and diet on mitigating greenhouse gases including methane
